Butterfly immerse audiences in classic tales, breathing new life into much loved texts. We invite you into unusual and extraordinary spaces to set our stories - such as caves, castles and woodlands - and bring truthful, responsive acting to excite and delight in every moment.
Imagine, deep underground in prehistoric caves, chanting from the witches of Macbeth echo through the caverns that surround you and a chill reaches your spine. Or in a beautiful woodland on a warm summer's day, fairy calls from A Midsummer Night’s Dream enchant you as they whisper and sing through the trees. Let yourself be immersed in the action as it plays out all around you, as you enjoy the real thrill of live theatre.
Our actors are trained to be alive and responsive to their constantly changing surroundings. This guarantees that each and every audience experiences a truly unique, alive and moment-to-moment performance, a strength which sets us apart from other theatre companies.
Since the company was formed in 2011, Butterfly have worked across the UK and Germany, in a host of unusual spaces including: Kents Cavern (Torquay), Tiefburg (Heidelberg, Germany), National Trust property '16 New Street' (Jersey), Puzzlewood (Forest of Dean) and even aboard a fleet of boats in Leigh Woods (Bristol) in collaboration with the international celebrated Visual Artist Luke Jerram.
Finding unique and inspiring locations, in which to set our site-responsive work, is at the core of what Butterfly creates. We look for the brilliant and the beautiful when we search for new places to explore, ensuring that each show responds to its surroundings, making every performance different from the last.
